| Standard Schnauzers were originally bred as an all purpose farm/guard dog, many have great instincts for herding. The Standard falls under the distinction of a loose eyed breed. It seems with Standards once you get past the bullet stage they have great herding potential. I do believe Herding and working temperment are genetic, we need to keep the herding Instinct alive in our Standards or it will be bred out eventually. It is such a thrill to watch your dog and the natural instinct they possess. There is a huge difference between Herding Instinct and just having Prey Drive. Herding is controlling prey drive but the dog must be willing to drive, gather and work for you, otherwise they just have prey drive and love the chase but not the work. Know the difference so you don't waste your money. Every dog has different talents work with what you have and discover what they excel at. |
