| Standard Schnauzers were originally bred as an all purpose farm/guard dog, many have great instincts for herding. The Standard falls under the distinction of a loose eyed breed. It seems with Standards once you get past the bullet stage they have great herding potential. We need to keep the herding Instinct alive in our Standards, or it will be bred out eventually. It is such a thrill to watch your dog and the natural instinct they posess. There is a huge difference between Herding Instinct and just having Prey Drive. Herding is controlling prey drive but the dog must be willing to drive, gather and work for you. That is Herding otherwise they just have prey drive and love the chase but not the work. We have one of each, know the difference so you don't waste money. Every dog has different talents work with what you have. You cannot train in Herding with just Prey drive. |
